Priorities of the Hendricks Isle / Isle of Venice Neighborhood Association:
It is the goal of the Neighborhood Association to protect, preserve and enhance property values and quality of life for all who reside on these two unique finger islands by teaming together. To date, the Neighborhood Association’s top priorities include:
1. Enhancing safety and security.
2. Monitoring development proposals to make certain that developers comply with City codes. All future development must remain compatible with current surrounding development, provide adequate drainage for high tides and storms, maintain aesthetic appeal and comply with City codes.
3. Working with the City to ensure developer impact fees are used for appropriate local improvements.
4. Resolving parking issues.
5. Ensuring the City provides strict enforcement of laws governing vacation rentals.
6. Pursing the burying of overhead electrical wires on Hendricks Isle to enhance aesthetics along the street andreduce the number of power outages.
7. Serving as an informational resource on City, County and Statewide issues that impact the lifestyles of property owners along Hendricks Isle and Isle of Venice
8. Creating opportunities social networking.
The “mom and pop” apartment complexes that were built in the 40’s, 50’s, & 60’s started being replaced with luxury boutique condominium and townhouse developments. While memories of yesterday are good to cherish, Fort Lauderdale was smart to embrace the new demographic and lifestyle changes as well as development trends. The inevitable outcome of these developmental shifts has resulted in the reduction of the numbers of live-a-board dock spaces. While Fort Lauderdale with its tropical climate and numerous waterways is an ideal area for the “live-a-board” lifestyle, the modernization of Hendricks Isle and Isle of Venice has created a reality not conducive to this way of life. To this point, most if not all condominium and townhouse developments have governing documents that restrict dock rentals and prohibit anyone from living aboard a boat. In the 80’s and 90’s, young parents raising children flocked to suburban living. As these parents, myself included, became empty nesters, the exciting attractions of Las Olas Blvd and the beach areas became more appealing than ever. Those of us desirous of downsizing, expanding our social circles, and living on the water, have found the luxury boutique condominiums and townhomes on Hendricks Isle and Isle of Venice the ideal place to live, socialize and take advantage of all the exceptional amenities our local neighborhood offers. The formation of this Neighborhood Association is a result of residents, through everyday conversations on the sidewalk, realizing that our community would benefit by having a representative entity. As development in this area continues, it is important that the voices of the people directly impacted are acknowledged. Community issues concerning safety, parking and the like must be considered when decisions are made at the governmental level. Our organization is a way for these voices to be a part of the conversation. On the horizon is a particular focus on providing sufficient drainage and increasing seawall heights to prevent flooding from rising sea water with all new development projects.
